More than seventy years ago, a party of dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield, accompanied by Mr Bilbo Baggins of the Shire, entered the Lonely Mountain on a quest to defeat the dragon Smaug and reclaim the Dwarves’ lost homeland.

They were never seen again.

Now, Middle Earth is on the brink of war. The Necromancer, driven out of his fortress of Dol Guldur in southern Mirkwood, has arisen once more in Mordor and openly declared himself as Sauron, the Dark Lord.

His Orcs probe ever deeper into the western lands, defying the forces of Gondor who try to keep them contained. Rumours abound that the ancient tower of Barad-Dur has been rebuilt. Smoke hangs over the peaks of the Ephel Duath.

And now the Wise have learned that, when Mr Baggins entered the Lonely Mountain all those years ago, he took with him a ring. A very special ring. The One Ring, forged by Sauron himself to dominate all of Middle Earth.

In Rivendell, Elrond Halfelven holds a council to decide what must be done. One thing is sure: Sauron must not get the Ring.

But can a Fellowship of the Free Peoples of Middle Earth find the Ring before Sauron does?

And how much does the dragon Smaug know about this treasure?
